The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that approximately one child dies every month following strangulation accidents involving products of the window-covering industry. And a second child each month suffers from near strangulation. As a result of these staggering numbers, the window blinds and window shades industry has faced recurring recalls in the past year. And in light of these recurring recalls, manufacturers should dust off their recall plans and prepare for any new standards that regulators propose for the industry. More

The Associated Press recently released results of its ongoing investigation into cadmium and lead in children’s products. The investigation has already led to recalls of children’s jewelry and drinking glasses that contained high levels of cadmium or lead. As the AP continues its investigative work, we can expect additional recalls to follow. In today’s era of increasing scrutiny by not only regulators, but also consumer advocates and the media, companies cannot afford to wait until public attention makes a recall inevitable. More
