Food Recalls and Food Safety Make the Editorial Pages

In the wake of a further expansion of the nationwide egg recall, food safety and consumer advocates are pressuring the Senate to take up the Food Safety Modernization Act (S. 510), which seeks to strengthen food safety procedures, including the recall process. The House passed its version of the bill almost a year ago, but the Senate has yet to bring its version to the floor for a vote. This lack of has everyone from consumer advocates to major newspapers calling for federal regulators to be given greater authority over food safety and food recalls.

FDA Strategic Priorities Provide Opportunities for Proactive Compliance

The FDA accepted comments last month on a draft version of its strategic priorities for the next four years. We often talk about how effective recall management can actually create opportunities during a recall crisis. Now, the results of a new survey show how a recall can impact your brand and customer loyalty. In fact, the results of the survey show that customer loyalty actually can be strengthened if a company is able to show consumers that it is in control during a recall. New Technology Helps Streamline Product Tracking Efforts

With the FDA and Congress turning their attention to the recent joint replacement recalls, new technology is poised to beat them to the punch. A new mobile app called iTraycer, which debuted earlier this month, is designed to trace medical devices from manufacture to surgery and beyond. This is just the latest example of how new technology is helping streamline the process of tracking products and identifying potential problems.

Citing the findings of a 10-year tracking report that examined risks at more than 800 retail food establishments, the FDA recently called for increased efforts to improve food safety in retail environments. In its call for improved food safety measures, the agency cited the need for more certified food safety managers. While recalls were not specifically addressed in the FDA announcement, food safety managers must be aware of the critical role recalls play in ensuring food safety.
