The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is stepping up its oversight and will be keeping a closer eye on food safety, the recall process, and recall management efforts by food manufacturers and producers. Following a 2005 internal audit that found Canada had “no clear policy” for public recall notification, the CFIA promised to make the recall process more transparent by making information about every recall available to the public. Previously, the CFIA only alerted the public to the most serious cases.

The Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO), a nonprofit organization that works to streamline government regulation, has received a government grant that will help it to help integrate national food safety networks. Greater coordination between food safety organizations is a crucial development for recall management. By integrating the oversight of domestic food supplies, regulators will be better able to identify the origin of contaminated food, determine the scope of a recall, and help companies and regulatory agencies effectively manage the recall process.

The Need for Effective Recall Management When Facing Consecutive Recalls

Fears of salmonella contamination have led to a second recall in as many years of soy flour – an ingredient sold on its own and used as an ingredient in many other products. The processor of the contaminated flour faces another tough test of its recall preparedness and recall management capabilities. Like the first recall last year, this incident is likely to have a significant impact all along the company’s food processing chain, requiring the removal from shelves of all the various products that used the recalled soy flour.

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report last month condemning the FDA’s efforts to track and regulate overseas pharmaceutical manufacturing. The GAO report emphasized that the FDA plays a more important role than ever before in guaranteeing the safety of our pharmaceutical supplies, which the GAO suggests are vulnerable to contamination from toxic or unchecked additives at foreign manufacturing plants.

New Standards Defining Cadmium Recalls for Jewelry Industry

After the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that it will write regulations limiting cadmium content in children’s jewelry if the industry fails to do so itself, the industry quickly responded, saying it would self-regulate according to standards that were passed ASTM International. With product manufacturers now on deadline to significantly minimize, if not eliminate cadmium in children’s products, it is imperative that the entire supply chain remains alert in order to prevent product recalls.
