Case Study: Tents

The Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) determined that certain camping tents failed to meet the industry’s flame resistant standard, placing thousands of owners at risk. The retailer, operating stores worldwide, needed to recall thousands of units.

The Stericycle ExpertRECALL™ team managed the recall:

• A public announcement was made and notification letters were sent to all known consumers.

• ExpertRECALL established a 1-800 number, equipped with both live agents and an interactive voice response system and received and managed thousands of call.

• ExpertRECALL worked with the retailer to determine that the most effective way to return the product and reduce shipping costs was to require the consumer to cut out a small portion of the top of the tent, deeming the tent unusable, and returning that piece of fabric. Return kits were sent to approximately 3,000 consumers and hundreds of refund checks were printed and mailed.

ExpertRECALL’s extensive knowledge of CPSC requirements enabled the company to maintain regulatory compliance and remove the tents from the marketplace to protect the public.
