ExpertRECALL Meets with Inez Tenenbaum

Just before the holidays I was in Washington, DC, meeting with CPSC Chairperson Inez Tenenbaum and other members of her team. We happened to meet on the same day as the massive recall of window blinds, which set the stage for an honest discussion on the serious nature of recalls.
We had a good conversation on safety, the power of technology to increase awareness of recalls, effectiveness of recalls and protecting the public. There was also agreement across the board in all of our agency meetings that recall preparedness is key when it comes to recall management and the need for increased recall effectiveness.
The agency has set a focus on improving follow through after recall is announced through social media means (Facebook, Twitter, blog, etc.), recognizing that heightened awareness can lead to increased effectiveness.
This is a new agency – very forward thinking – seeking to achieve a balancing act between manufacturers, retailers and consumers.
At the beginning of this new year, all parties can make a committed resolution to maintaining (and for some improving) efforts on being prepared for a recall. Ask yourself the question “Are you ready?” If you cannot answer with a confident, resounding “ABSOLUTELY,” then you may have a little bit of work to do in Quarter 1. A little effort now can pay tremendous dividends later.
