As many of us are returning from the holiday break and family vacations, I am reminded of a business lesson:  “Risk doesn’t take a vacation.”

A few weeks ago I attended Directorship’s Boardroom Leaders Forum – “New Voices in the Boardroom” at The Metropolitan Club in New York City.  The meeting brought hundreds of board members and high-level executives from a host of industries together to discuss what’s keeping board members awake at night – critical issues like crisis communication, compensation, and risk management.

With regard to risk, companies look to familiar bell weathers – financial fluctuations, the impact of globalization and competitive outlooks; but with today’s heightened regulatory oversight, a more frequent conversation involves product recall risk.

For those companies that manufacture products used or consumed by consumers/patients this risk must not be overlooked. Taking steps to be prepared can make all the difference when it comes to the safety of the consumer, the survival of a brand, or the financial future of a company.

One relatively easy step in mitigating recall risk is taking simple recall preparedness steps: identifying your core team, drafting a recall plan, conducting a mock exercise.

We all enjoy our vacations, but recalls happen 24/7. Recall risk doesn’t take a vacation.
