The latest of many high-profile recalls this year comes from Sony which recently announced the recall of half a million Vaio notebook computers because of overheating problems. Once again a well-known company is facing a recall because of problems associated with a defective component.

This recall is one of several high-profile recalls that have occurred this year that are not directly tied to the core product but rather to packaging, ingredients, or components. This further highlights how important it is for manufacturers to have confidence in their supply chain partners. I recently spoke with TechNewsWorld about the Sony Vaio recall and the increasingly complex supply chains resulting from more widespread outsourcing.

In order to protect consumers, companies must know their suppliers and have confidence in their quality control measures. Maintaining product standards throughout the supply chain and manufacturing process is increasingly difficult as the supply chain becomes more complex. As a result, manufacturers are increasing their own testing and tightening their standards in order to ensure product quality and consumer safety.

Sony has received 30 reports of overheating Vaio laptops. Although no injuries have been reported, the defect has the potential to make the laptop hot enough to cause skin burns. Sony has taken immediate action to correct the problem by offering a firmware patch that consumers can download and install on their own or arrange for Sony to pick up the device and install it for them.

Sony is taking all the right measures to address the problem, but the best recall management strategy is still to prevent the recall in the first place.  Keep a close eye on your suppliers and manufacturers. That extra scrutiny and caution will pay big dividends in helping to prevent a costly and complicated recall.
