Toyota Sparks Recalls across the Industry

It usually takes a recall of immense proportions for the whole world to take notice. And when a recall of that magnitude does occur, it draws attention to the company’s crisis management, government regulatory policies and the industry’s overall recall preparedness. Right now, Toyota is at the center of such a recall.
Despite the dozens of recalls across several industries going on right now, world media attention remains focused on the Japanese automaker. But the entire car industry wisely appears to be learning from Toyota’s experience. As I explained to CNNMoney.com, automakers are looking at Toyota and realizing that it’s not out of the question that they could face the same scrutiny and criticism by government officials, lawmakers and consumers.
The same thing happened in 2007 with the global toy recalls.
Regardless of what your company manufactures or sells, it’s important to remember that you are not alone. Your industry can be impacted by a significant recall no matter how poorly or effectively it is managed. Study the actions of your competitors and keep an even closer eye on the perceptions of lawmakers and regulators. What they are facing today will very likely impact your ability to prepare for a recall and manage it effectively in the future.
