And the Winner Is…

There was stiff competition this year but the results are in for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) 2nd annual Chairman’s Commendation Awards.
Created in 2011, the Chairman’s Commendation Awards identify and honor people, organizations, businesses, state and local governments and other groups who work to improve upon consumer product safety.
Any individual in or outside the United States can submit nominations for consideration. And the number of winners each year is at CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum’s discretion.
This year, four individuals were honored with this prestigious award.
And the winners are:
- Judith Bannon, Executive Director of Cribs for Kids – Bannon started this national infant safe sleep initiative in 1998 to provide safe cribs to high-risk, low-income families and educate caregivers about the dangers of unsafe sleep environments.
- Dr. Ik-Whan Kwon, Director of St. Louis University’s Center for Supply Chain Management Studies – This center became the first to offer university-level product safety courses for product safety professionals within the manufacturing industry. Dr. Kwon has led the program since its start and has earned the title of product safety ‘patron’ at the school.
- Stephen Teret, JD, MPH, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health – Dr. Teret, a professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management, is a pioneer in the field of public health law. He is also a widely-acclaimed national leader in product safety, injury and violence prevention and food policy.
- Rachel Weintraub, Director of Product Safety and Senior Counsel for the Consumer Federation of America. – Weintraub led a coalition of consumer, public health and public interest groups that worked with Congress on consumer product safety reform. The result was the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008.
Congratulations to this year’s winners and thanks to all of those who continue to work effortlessly to reduce deaths, prevent injuries and improve consumer product safety.
